Aztec Clay Mask for Hair: Benefits, Uses, and Tips

Have you heard of the Aztec clay mask for hair? When your curls simply do not pop or bounce any longer, you want to put in the work, but maybe you’re exhausted from the constant upkeep.

Does this sound familiar? Instead of expensive hair products designed to enhance curls, an Aztec clay mask helps cleanse your hair and revitalize and soften your curls.

How to Use an Aztec Clay Mask for Hair

Like most obscure beauty products, you may not find Aztec Healing Clay or Bentonite Clay, as it is sometimes called, at your run-of-the-mill beauty store. However, you can usually find a jar online, through stores such as Amazon or specialty shops, for the right price.

Your directions may vary, but most Aztec Clay requires a mixture of equal parts apple cider vinegar and clay. If you have a full head of hair down to the small of your back, you may need to adjust the mixture—perhaps double the concoction.

With your hair fully dry, evenly distribute the clay mixture from root to tip, covering your scalp and your ends in a single go. It would help if you coated each strand. If you miss any, the clay mask could fail.

Once your hair is coated in the clay mask, leave it on for fifteen to twenty minutes. Some people choose to leave their masks in for up to 45 minutes. Either way, you want the mask to dry and harden. A dry mask means it is working.

Once it is time to wash the clay out, use warm or cool water, especially if you have curls, and do not rinse with shampoo.

Benefits of Bentonite Clay

Besides the noticeable healthy, strong hair that bentonite clay produces, an Aztec clay mask for hair also:

  • Detoxifies — Helps to remove impurities, sebum, dirt, and oils from the scalp.
  • Dandruff Aid — The same detoxifying properties as before also help actively treat and remove dandruff.
  • Hair Growth — With a healthier scalp, hair growth is far more likely to occur.
  • Frizzy Hair — If you’re tired of the frizz, a clay mask tames the mess and reduces loose strands.
  • Scalp Infections — The excess oil on your head may lead to scalp infections, which bentonite clay may treat.

As you can see, there are a few practical benefits to note. Bentonite clay, or an Aztec clay mask, is profound in how it works, especially when it comes to detoxifying the hair and scalp.

Is Aztec Clay Safe?

Bentonite Clay

When it comes to any beauty product—hair or otherwise—you likely worry about safety. Are there chemicals? Will it cause a rash? These questions and more like them pop into your head.

You’ll be happy to know that bentonite clay is entirely safe. We recommend that most people try a test patch before coating their entire head, like most other hair care products, but most do not experience any itching or rashes.

Once the mask begins to dry and harden, your scalp may itch slightly. This sensation is entirely normal, though. If you experience more, like an unbearable itch or irritation, wash the clay mask from your hair immediately and stop using it, though this is rare.

However, it is essential to note that if your scalp is extremely dry and sensitive, do not use bentonite clay. It is strong and may lead to a dryer scalp than usual.

Is There Any Side Effect of Using Aztec Clay For Hair?

Again, most people do not experience anything more than entirely normal itching as the clay mask dries.

Other than that, no, there are no adverse side effects. Due to the negative charge of bentonite clay, it cannot leach into the scalp or skin. The compound dries on the scalp and hair, hardens, and is then washed away without fanfare.

As you can see, an Aztec clay mask for hair is as close to a miracle beauty product as you can find on the market today.

It helps heal your hair, treat scalp concerns, reduce dandruff, and is easy to mix, apply, and wash at the end of the day. What a fantastic product!
